The Xbox360 launched with great fanfare in Tokyo Akihabara’s Yodobashi Camera, with SKE48 being the center of attraction.
Team Kinect is made up of the idol group’s WMatsui, Jurina Matsui(松井珠理奈) and Rena Matsui(松井玲奈). They are not actually blood-related, despite their common last name. Random info that I accidentally read from Japanese wiki: Jurina Matsui stole Rena Matsui’s first kiss…
Anyway, getting back on topic, the launch event reportedly attracted more than 100 people early adopter in the morning, with another 50 from the press corps. 100 is does not seem like a bad number, but the press to customer ratio sounds a bit high. According to Kotaku, elsewhere in the country, including the busy Osaka, the launch has gone mostly unnoticeable.
While Kinect’s launch is rather unlikely to make Microsoft caught up with Playstation3′s sales in Japane this late in the console cycle, it can be a good foundation for next generation’s console. Interestingly, according to Famitsu’ customer survey of anticipated gaming products for the holiday season, significantly more people are interested in Kinect, compared with Sony’s Playstation Move. Both are nowhere near the anticipation level for Monster Hunter 3, though.
